My experience of private sector is small but it has involved a constant nagging feeling throughout the team of "working my butt off for nothing so the boss can have a new Merc" - maybe it was that one boss but I never felt like that in public sector. It was more "working my butt off for nothing so we can all have a new health centre/safer streets/better education/a voice where it can make a difference".

Working for myself is different again and this is certainly the best job I've ever had in terms of enjoyment (though not financially!), but oddly most of my fellow franchisees were public sector originally. I think that makes a huge amount of difference to the atmosphere and why our retention rates are so high compared with the competition. Public sector is a state of mind; service oriented, looking outwards, doing what you can for a community. You can still make money doing that and some private companies do. It's when the "I've got mine, screw you" mindset takes over that we all run into trouble.Carolinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05003411148319982087noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7018371774869383950.post-78201442798439444872010-08-26T10:54:47.592+01:002010-08-26T10:54:47.592+01:00I knew there would be some stories out there that ...I knew there would be some stories out there that really got both the journey through and commitment to, public service, point across.

Thanks for the reference, but mostly thanks for the contribution. Too many roles are not really justified in these hard times. They are 'nice to haves' rather than needs, and I struggle to see value for money from the public purse at present. The public sector is still insulated from the realities of UK PLC.

(oh and you would love working for a digital agency, think you'd learn a new level of job satisfaction)Iannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7018371774869383950.post-60759095376345421442010-08-25T20:11:33.163+01:002010-08-25T20:11:33.163+01:00Hi Louise, thankyou so much for writing this - I f...Hi Louise, thankyou so much for writing this - I feel exactly the same - about the challenges, about the opportunities, about actually enjoying the work and putting 100% effort in, and especially about the team of colleagues I work with. I like your line that we are part of an army of people who feel the same - and its good to find people saying so out loud!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
